The nationality of the prisoners was encrypted in two different boxes. The numbers in the second box stand for the citizenship held by the prisoners, which is also specified in the text box: 01 for prisoners from the German Reich, 07 for Italians, 09 for people from the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, and 22 for Ukrainians, for example. The highest known number is 56 for prisoners from Mexico. In addition to the exact specification of the person’s nationality, the text box may also indicate whether the person was a citizen of the German Reich (R, Reichsdeutsch) or from abroad (A). This information was also entered in the first box in coded form: 1 for a citizen of the German Reich, 2 for ethnic Germans, and 3 for foreigners.
