If a prisoner was transferred, released or had died, this was noted in the space for Abgangsart (“type of departure”). C-3 stood for “death by natural causes,” though this could also mean the prisoner had died because of the catastrophic living conditions in the camp or as a result of human medical experiments, or had been shot while (supposedly) trying to escape. D-4 stood for execution, E-5 for suicide and F-6 for “special treatment,” which meant murder by decree. A release was indicated by A-1, a transfer to another camp by B-2 and escape by G-7. In the vast majority of cases, however, this information was not noted on the Hollerith preparatory worksheet card. It can be found instead on departure or transfer lists.
