Some envelopes indicate whether the documents inside relate to a female or male prisoner. The envelopes differ considerably on this point. On envelopes from camps that mostly held men, such as Dachau, the prisoner’s gender is not noted because the ITS did not have separate card files for female and male Dachau prisoners. The standard envelopes for documents from Ravensbrück concentration camp, however, are marked (Frauen) to indicate female prisoners. For individual documents relating to prisoners from the men’s camp at Ravensbrück, this annotation was either crossed out or changed by hand on the envelopes.
