ITS employees used to remove documents from the postwar card file if an inquiry was received about a person. They then placed the cards in what is known as a T/D file. This process was referred to as “sent to file.” The handwritten number indicates the current location of the respective file in the Arolsen Archives. T/D stands for “tracing/documentation.” To this day, when the ITS receives an inquiry about a person, a T/D file is created. If another inquiry is received about the same person later on – even decades later – the same file is referred to again. The more than 2.4 million T/D files often contain important supplementary information about a person’s life and path of persecution.
