The Bemerkungen (“Remarks”) field was used by hospital administrative employees to note two pieces of information above all: the DP registration number and the patient’s nationality. The multi-digit registration number was assigned to DPs by UNRRA or the IRO when the DPs first arrived in a DP camp. All DPs carried a slip of paper with them – the DP 1 card – on which this number was printed. Theoretically, all issues relating to a particular DP were to be handled using this single registration number. There are also cards which note the patient’s religion in this field using abbreviations such as “r.k.” for Roman-Catholic or “orth.” for Orthodox.
