The Allies allowed the DPs to specify the nationality they claimed for themselves. Even as early as 1944, the authors of the instructions for filling out the DP documents were aware that it could be difficult for some people to state a nationality: “The Registrar will assist the Registrant in the event of indecision regarding nationality but the nationality finally entered in this space will be that claimed by the Registrant” (Instruction/6.1.1/82508348/ITS Digital Archive, Arolsen Archives). The nationality had to subsequently be checked and confirmed by the respective country.
