DPs were only supposed to stay in a DP camp temporarily while they regained their strength, received medical care and prepared to return home or emigrate. For this reason, right after the space for the DP’s arrival date in the camp, the form asked for the departure date. This date would be noted on the DP 3 card when the DP left the camp; the DP’s destination was to be written at the same time in the respective field. However, particularly in the immediate postwar period, DPs often independently moved to a different camp without checking out of the previous one. This is probably why there is no departure date noted on many DP 3 cards.
