The DP 2 card was issued in duplicate. One card was marked as the original, and the second card was the duplicate. One of the cards would initially remain in the DP camp and would then be given to DPs to take with them if they were moved to another camp. The other card was sent either directly or via one of the zonal tracing offices to the Central Tracing Bureau (CTB) and later to the International Tracing Service (ITS), the predecessors to the Arolsen Archives. The DP 2 cards were used by these organizations to search for missing persons. However, it is not clear how the Arolsen Archives came to hold both the duplicates and the originals.
