To begin with, there was only one medical barrack in Gross-Rosen. But as the number of prisoners continued to rise, more and more medical blocks were set up. In January 1945 there were seven blocks. When a prisoner was transferred to one of these blocks, this transfer was noted on the card together with the number of the block. Sometimes the block is written as R IV with a Roman numeral, sometimes as R 5 with an Arabic numeral. Sometimes all that is written is Verl. 7, indicating a transfer (Verlegung) to block 7 of the clinic. Transfers to the exemption block (Schonung, Sch.) or quarantine (Quarantäne, Qu.) were also noted. The exemption block was a part of the clinic where prisoners were supposed to be able to recuperate and did not have to work. The quarantine block was supposed to ensure that a patient was no longer infectious.
