In the Netherlands, Jews were only allowed to shop at Jewish stores. Thus, there were special exemptions to allow Jewish businesses to continue to operate. Abraham Hes was assigned Sperre (deportation exemption) number 96,871 and was initially allowed to continue to run his fish business (Lok Z Vischlokaal). But on July 6, 1943, he was deported to the Sobibor death camp. As the number of Jewish residents in Amsterdam dwindled, the deportation exemptions became rarer.
