The Jewish Council was dissolved in September 1943 and the council members were deported to Westerbork. The Sperren (deportation exemptions) that were issued no longer provided any protection. Only a small group of 170 members of the Jewish Council remained in Amsterdam to continue their administrative work. They received special Ausnahmebescheinigungen (certificates of exception), which were noted on the index cards with “Au-Be 170” in the top center and outlined in red (shown here for Otto Abeles).
