In this letter, the Karlsruhe employment office provides information on the whereabouts of work book cards after the war. They had allegedly been removed from storage due to the bomb raids on the city, whereby “during their transport and itemization, as well as owing to subsequent events of the war [...], part of the card index was lost, a further number of work book cards were lost as a result of destruction and looting.” Letters from other employment offices are similar. They report fires, seizures, or lootings, although they do not say who took the cards. Only in rare cases are there mentions of direct orders to burn the records of civilian forced laborers before the end of the war.
