In the late 1980s, and especially in the 1990s, the International Tracing Service (ITS), the predecessor institution of the Arolsen Archives, began asking companies for documents that provided information about foreign laborers during the Second World War. Some companies sent lists or entire card indexes. Often, however, they replied that no further documents had survived.
