Personal effects cards were created even if prisoners were so weak after a transport that they were unable to speak, or if they were dead on arrival. The Arolsen Archives have preserved such cards for people who had been transported from Auschwitz to Buchenwald or Dachau. In many cases, even their names were not known. Their personal effects cards have comments such as vernehmungsunfähig (“unable to be questioned”) or unbekannter Toter (“unknown deceased”).
