Even the Political Departments of the concentration camps apparently developed a reference system for managing misspellings. In Buchenwald, for example, a reference card was created for Anna Kopankowa. These reference cards can be identified by the stamp that reads Hinweiskarte (“reference card”) and by the fact that they have very little information. On the seven documents for Anna Kopankowa from Buchenwald concentration camp that have been preserved by the Arolsen Archives, her last name is spelled in three different ways (Kabankowa, Kopankowa and Konopakowa).
