With this letter, the eligibility officer of the IRO Control Center Schweinfurt requested a review of an applicant by the Wehrmachtauskunftstelle (Wehrmacht Information Office or WASt, known as the Deutsche Dienststelle from 1946). The WASt was founded in 1939 in Berlin to determine whether soldiers fighting for Germany had been captured, gone missing, or were wounded or killed. After the war, other documents were sent to the WASt as well, including some about members of the Waffen-SS and the Reich Labor Service. Employees could check whether an applicant was named in any of these documents and had thus belonged to a Nazi organization.
