After the borders had changed as a result of World War I and II, it was not always easy to specify someone’s nationality. The DPs themselves often defined their nationality in different ways. Even if they had been born in the same place, some would view themselves as Poles, others as Ukrainians and still others as stateless. Wolodymir Grigoriuk, who was born in Lublin, initially wrote on his DP 2 card that he was stateless. This information was later crossed out and changed to “Polish-Ukrainian.” “Polish-Ukrainian” was not really a distinct nationality, but it was written on many cards nonetheless.
