According to UNRRA instructions for the US occupation zone from October 1945, the supplementary records were supposed to be forwarded to the Child Tracing Branch “as soon as they are completed” so that the search could begin. The instructions also explained how the search was to be carried out: After the child’s DP 2 card and supplementary record had arrived, employees checked the master index (also known as the child search index) and created a file specifically for the child. These files, which then held the child’s supplementary record and DP 2 card, can now be viewed in the Arolsen Archives.
