Together with the transport lists, the Asset Utilization Office was given the order by the Gestapo to seize the property of the deportees. The “4th large elder transport” (4. große Alterstransport) mentioned in this letter took nearly 1,200 Jews from Berlin to Theresienstadt on March 17, 1943. Many former soldiers who had fought for Germany in World War I were assigned to this transport. Other transports went from Berlin to the Lodz/Litzmannstadt ghetto, to Riga or to the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp.
