In the summer of 1942, there were 22 transit camps for the individual Landesarbeitsamtsbezirke (regional employment office districts). Just one year later, in the summer of 1943, 46 transit camps existed which were distributed across the 42 Gauarbeitsamtsbezirke (Gau employment office districts). Along with large camps capable of housing more than 2,000 people, there were numerous smaller, often temporary camps.
