As this prisoner registration card shows, prisoners spent only a relatively short period of time in Amersfoort during the second phase of the camp’s existence. Peter van Meerveld arrived at Amersfoort on October 2, 1944, and was taken to Neuengamme concentration camp (abbreviated here as KL. N) just a few days later, on October 11. Van Meerveld had been taken hostage in his hometown of Putten on October 1, 1944, after four members of the Wehrmacht had been injured there in an assassination attempt carried out by the resistance. A total of over 600 residents of Putten were subsequently arrested, and only 49 of the men survived. Peter van Meerveld died in November 1944.
