This is a variation of the tracing office cards (Suchstellenkarten) that were created after the end of the Second World War as part of the foreigner tracing campaign (Ausländersuchaktion). In the US occupation zone, each state responded differently to the Allies’ order to compile information on non-German citizens who had been registered there since 1939. This tracing office card was created in the state of Hesse. Each column represents a different type of list. Column F, for example, refers to lists of persons without German citizenship who were temporarily registered in the particular district during the war. This applied mainly to civilian forced laborers. If the person is mentioned in a document, this is noted in the relevant column. These lists can be viewed in the Arolsen Archives online collection (Collection 2.1.1.1).

e-Guide rozróżnia pomiędzy kartami głównymi i wariantami. Wynika to z tego, że jeden typ dokumentów jest czasami dostępny w różnych wersjach, które mogą się od siebie znacznie różnić.
Karty główne to standardowe dokumenty, które szczególnie często używane były w obozach koncentracyjnych, obozach dla osób przemieszczonych oraz podczas rejestrowania pracowników przymusowych i na temat których dostępnych jest wiele informacji. W Arolsen Archives dostępne są również warianty, które wprawdzie miały ten sam cel, co odpowiadająca im karta główna, jednak różnią się wyglądem. Wynika to z różnych przyczyn: czasami w obozach zamiast standardowych wersji stosowano specjalnie przygotowane karty. Często wynikało to też z faktu, że najpierw używano indywidualnych kart i kwestionariuszy, a dopiero później wprowadzono ujednolicone formularze.
